- Vestal's linux text
- THE GASHOUS
-
-
- Ok kids, this is gonna be a long series of text philes... right now this is part one
- of two that have been planned, but I will continue to write as I learn.
-
- I'm going to start by telling you how to install linux because without that
- you're not going to need any of this.
- The easiest by far is phat linux which is currently in version 3.1. All you
- do is download the phile and extract it to whatever drive you want it then double-click
- on linux.bat or phat.bat and in runs off of your dos partition.
-
- If you want a real version of linux that runs off of a linux partition then i suggest
- either red hat or yellow dog. First you decide if you want linux only or if you
- prefer to run it with windows so that you can learn it before you get rid of
- windows completely. Trust me, once you learn linux with xwindows you will never
- want to use windows with dos again. Most people will want to have ms windows and
- linux run at the same time, so we'll start with that.
- First, you make a partition. if you've never done any kind of re-formatting before then
- you might want to read up on that first. Otherwise, back your shit up, reformat, and go
- into fdisk and create 2 partitions, one for windows and one for linux to fit your desired size
- specs.
- Here comes the fun part. ;) After re-installing Windows and all the other fun stuff for
- it, you need to find out exactly what is in your system, so have windows print you up a system
- report. It will contain all necessary info like I/O requests, drivers, and so on.
- We are going to discuss the install from a CD ROM Drive, so if you downloaded, put it onto
- cd or order it. It's inexpensive and most people have cd write capabilities nowadays.
- First thing is to create a boot disk. Assuming you are in an MS DOS prompt and your cd rom
- drive is letter D: we do the following after inserting a floppy in the floppy drive and
- the cd in the cd drive....
-
- C:>D:
- D:>cd\dosutils
- D:>DOSUTILS\>rawrite
- Enter disk image source file name: d:\images\boot.img
- Enter target diskette drive: a:
- Please insert a formatted diskette into drive A: and press -ENTER- :
- D:\DOSUTILS>
-
- Now we have a boot disk. Leave the disks in their drives. Now restart the computer.
- You should get a WELCOME TO LINUX screen of some sort. There will be a boot prompt.
- Press ENTER. Press it again at the welcome screen. Select the language of choice. Choose
- your type of keyboard... if you are unsure just look at the system report you had printed
- in Windows. It will ask what type of media you are using... select the cd rom drive option.
- It may ask what type of cd rom drive you are using... see your system report again. It will
- also ask whether to install a new system or update one, select install. Choose custom.
- You will now get a choice between using disk druid or fdisk to partition your hard drive, we are
- going to use disk druid because it is easier and takes less time.
- At the disk Druid screen, hit the tab key until the cursor is in the mount point section.
- You can use the arrow keys to select which partition on your hd you want to change. Hit the tab
- key to get the edit button and press enter. Change values you want. When finished, hit the tab
- key to get the ok button and hit ENTER. Repeat to make more partitions, and when finished, go
- to the main Disk Druid Screen, tab to the ok button and hit ENTER. Restart system. Go through
- until you reach the Format Partitions dialogue box and select the partiton your linux OS is to be
- installed on. Select the check for bad blocks during format option. After you select your choices,
- hit tab until you reac the ok buttion and hit ENTER. A Screen appears allowing you to select what
- software you want. Do it, dummy. Now you are set and it is downhill from here.
-
- Congrats!!!! Linux is installed. Now configure XWindows. Hopefully in the software options you
- decided to install XWindow system. You will be prompted to Configure an X Server. Do it, dummy.
- Specify what your system has per your system report and you pretty much have it done.
-
- Yeah!!!!!! Linux is now installed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
- STAY TUNED FOR PART 2, COMING SOON FROM VESTAL VIA THE GASHOUS!!!!!!!!
